SES volunteers ambassadors at WYD2 July 2008, 2:38pmState Emergency Service (SES) volunteers were ready to welcome visitors to Sydney for Catholic World Youth Day (WYD) events, SES Director General, Brigadier Philip McNamara said today.
Brigadier McNamara said 120 SES volunteers would work with NSW Police on crowd and traffic management at events during WYD. “Our volunteers will not be WYD authorised officers and therefore will not be exercising any powers in regards to people inconveniencing or annoying pilgrims. Law enforcement is the responsibility of the Police. “The SES members assisting with WYD events will present a welcoming face to the thousands of visitors coming to Sydney to take part. “The SES’ role will be to support the Police with crowd management and traffic control operations, particularly to maintain road closures. “They have been rostered to work in the vicinity of the major WYD venues, such as Barangaroo, the CBD, St Mary’s Cathedral and Randwick. “This is in keeping with our role during the Olympic Torch Relay and Olympic Games in 2000 and at events such as the City to Surf every year. “SES volunteers are known for their professional and helpful approach and they will be doing their best to welcome and assist the pilgrims and other visitors during the week’s events. “Their emphasis will be on crowd management and safety and they will be referring any security or law enforcement matters directly and immediately to the NSW Police.”
