Windy Wednesday Keeps SES Busy

2 July 2008, 11:28am

Winds gusting to 111 km/hr have brought down trees and powerlines, damaged property and kept SES crews busy this morning.

In the past 36 hours the SES has received 200 requests for assistance from the public from gale force winds that have affected parts of the Illawarra, Sydney Metro, Hunter and Southern Tablelands. Most requests for assistance occured this morning with winds at Bellambi near Wollongong gusting to111 km/hr, and in Kiama to 78 km/hr.

Damage reported to the SES has included trees down on roads, fences and property; damage to roofs including dislodged tiles and roofing iron torn from buildings, and damage to powerlines.

SES volunteer crews have completed 143 of the 200 requests for assistance, with further calls still being received. The majority of outstanding requests are expected to be completed by this evening subject to moderating weather conditions.

With strong winds still occuring the SES is urging people to not park their car under a tree and ensure that they secure or put away items outside that could blow away in the wind.

If people require assistance from the SES, they should call 132 500.
