$23,000 State Government boost for Maclean SES

10 June 2008, 4:49pm

Emergency Services Minister, Nathan Rees, has presented Clarence Valley Council with a $23,000 grant towards the cost of a new emergency vehicle for the Maclean SES Unit.

Mr Rees presented the cheque for the funds to Mayor Cr Ian Tiley at the Shires Association of NSW Annual Conference.

“The Iemma Government is committed to providing our world-class emergency services with the best equipment and training and has delivered on that commitment in the State budget with a record $57.6 million funding for the SES, an increase of $6.1 million or 12 per cent,” Mr Rees said.

“Increased funding for the SES will provide for additional emergency response vehicles, upgrading to Unit Headquarters accommodation and enhanced training, development and recruitment programs.”

The Unit is getting a new Isuzu 550 dual cab truck, fitted for road crash and general rescue and storm response, enabling the safe and efficient transport of both volunteers and essential equipment such as ladders, hydraulic cutting gear and lighting.

“Safe and reliable vehicles are essential when volunteers are called to respond to a potentially life-threatening emergency such as a road crash.

“This new vehicle will enable the SES to respond to requests for assistance from the public more efficiently and safely.

Unit Controller Ron Rushton said the new vehicle would be of great assistance to the unit and the local community.

“The Maclean Unit plays a key role in the safety of the community, in particular in responding to motor vehicle accidents. The addition of a reliable and comfortable vehicle such as this will significantly boost our ability to respond to requests for assistance,” Mr Rushton said.

Mr Rees has praised the volunteers of the Maclean SES Unit saying that like every SES unit, they were ready around the clock to help when they were needed, often in the most trying and inclement conditions.
