10 June 2008, 4:46pm

The Minister for Emergency Services, Nathan Rees today presented Junee Shire Council Mayor, Cr Lola Cumminsl with $10,000 towards their new four wheel drive emergency response vehicle at the Shires Association Annual Conference.

Mr Rees said the SES played an important role in the Junee community and the new vehicle would assist their response to storms, floods and a range of other emergencies.

A further $17,000 has been presented to Junee Shire Council to purchase the Junee Unit’s former vehicle which has been relocated to the Leeton SES Unit.

“The Iemma Government is committed to providing our world-class emergency services with the best equipment and training and has delivered on that commitment in the State budget with a record $57.6 million funding for the SES, an increase of $6.1 million or 12 per cent,” Mr Rees said.

“Increased funding for the SES will provide for additional emergency response vehicles, upgrading to Unit Headquarters accommodation and enhanced training, development and recruitment programs.

“Safe and reliable vehicles are essential when volunteers are called to respond to emergencies such as floods and storms,” Mr Rees said.

“This new vehicle will enable the June SES to respond to requests for assistance from the public more efficiently and safely.

Local Controller David Noy said the new vehicle would be of great assistance to the unit and the local community.

“The Junee Unit plays a key role in the safety of the community and the addition of a reliable and comfortable vehicle such as this will significantly boost our ability to respond to requests for assistance,” Mr Noy said.

Mr Rees has praised the volunteers of the Junee SES Unit saying that like every SES unit, they were ready around the clock to help when they were needed, often in the most trying and inclement conditions.

“The community in this region know they can rely on the members of the SES to help them in times of trouble, no matter what time of day or night or how far they have to travel. They deserve our gratitude and thanks,” Mr Rees said.
