When a Cyclone Warning is Issued

A tropical cyclone warning is issued by the Bureau of Meteorology when cyclonic gales are expected within 24 hours.

A Tropical Cyclone Warning is issued by the Bureau of Meteorology for coastal communities when gales are expected within 24 hours.

Tropical Cyclone Warnings are posted on the Bureau of Meteorology's Current Tropical Cyclones page.

Further information on Cyclone Advices including watches and warnings is available from the Bureau of Meteorology.

If a Cyclone Warning has been issued for your area, the New South Wales SES recommends that you:

  • Collect children from school or childcare and go home
  • Put wooden or plastic outdoor furniture in your pool or indoors
  • Park vehicles under cover (not under a tree)
  • Close shutters or board up and heavily tape all windows. Draw curtains and lock doors
  • Prepare for possible evacuation. Have your emergency kit ready and have spare clothes, nappies, medication and other items ready
  • Bring small companion animals indoors
  • Listen to the radio for updates and advice
  • Check your neighbours have heard the warning and assist them if you are able
  • Ensure you have adequate cash
  • Have sufficient supplies of food, medications and other essential items such as nappies or formula to last at least three days
  • Secure boats, trailers and caravans as well as rainwater tanks, garden sheds and LPG bottles
  • Put away rubbish bins

If you live in an area that could be affected by storm surge flooding, or if you have special needs, you should consider relocating to family or friends, or where operating, to an evacuation centre.

If evacuation is necessary you will be advised by the emergency services. This may be via radio, television, doorknock or mobile public address. You should remain vigilant and be prepared to move if directed.

It is important that you continue to listen to the radio and take preventative actions until the 'All Clear' is given.
