Lower Hawkesbury FloodSafe Guide

The Hawkesbury River and its tributaries (such as the Colo River, Webbs Creek, the Macdonald River and Mangrove Creek) have created a beautiful environment, but the very nature of this landscape leaves it prone to flooding.

In the past, parts of Sackville, Wisemans Ferry, Spencer and other communities on the lower river have experienced flooding. Future floods, big and small, are a certainty and some will inundate large parts of these communities.

The record 1867 flood reached a peak gauge height of 15.6 metres at Sackville Ferry, 11.5 metres at Lower Portland and 6 metres at Wisemans Ferry. A similar flood today would inundate many caravan parks and other properties, and all of the lower-lying parts of Wisemans Ferry would be flooded. Similarly, areas along the Colo River would be inundated.
