Prepare for Severe Storms and Heavy Rain Says SES

27 November 2008, 11:32am

With both potentially severe storms forecast over much of the state Friday, and heavy rain possible for the northern inland of the state, the SES is urging people to prepare their properties and to take care when travelling.

According to the Bureau of meteorology, severe storms are likely in many districts of the state over Friday. Thunderstorms are were occurring in the far west and around the Hunter and North West Slopes districts at 10:30am, and are likely to develop later over all parts of NSW today. The large supply of moisture in the low levels combined with the very unstable atmosphere and strong upper winds associated with a dynamic developing low pressure system form an environment favourable for all types of severe weather. It is expected that warnings will be issued for the majority of the state later today, including the highly populated areas around Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong.

In addition, moderate to heavy falls of rain are likely in the northern inland of New South Wales during Friday and into Saturday, with the worst affected area being the North West Slopes and Plains region. Catchments in the north west of the state are wet following good rains over the past few weeks, and this will contribute to rapid stream rises in some areas once rain commences.  The SES is urging people not to drive, ride or walk through floodwaters that are encountered as water may be deeper or faster flowing than you think, contain washed out sections of roadway and hidden snags and debris. Under no circumstances should motorists drive around a road closed sign. Under no circumstances enter floodwater or rivers where rises are likely. Rural property owners should closely monitor stream conditions for rises and take action to relocate stock and equipment if required.

The SES recommends that property owners prepare for storms by:

  • ensuring that their roof is in good repair
  • clearing gutters, downpipes and drains of debris and leaves
  • securing or putting away loose items such as trampolines, garden furniture, loose tin and other light items
  • trimming branches away from buildings, pergolas and carports where safe to do so and permitted by your local council
  • parking cars under shelter, not under a tree
